“We would like to mend fences and cover the trenches, we would like to bring over those who are willing to fall in line. There are positions for them. Everyone has a place in the System. But we must not be attacked publicly, because you become the enemy of the System.”
A local Fidesz strongman succinctly explains Orbán’s system to some local mayors in a newly leaked audio recording.
„The thing is that there is this System of National Cooperation [NER for short, as Orbán likes to call it – trans.], of which we are all parts of. And if someone hurts this system, tries to damage it publicly, it is as if he attacked each and every member of this system. Because if someone in Tiszafüred [town in Eastern Hungary – trans.] goes to the press to attack the mayor, it is like attacking every other mayor, or me personally.”
He is talking about a bureaucrat in a nearby town, Tiszafüred, who blew the whistle in some issues. He later became an opposition candidate. Tribalism and cult-like group mentality at its prime.
“This is how we see things, so obviously, we do’t like it when someone fights the system while also tries to … do his job. … When someone openly confronts us, it is obvious to me that he is not good at his job either. So we’d like to ask that this man be removed from everywhere, as soon as possible, who, by the way, causes problems in Tiszafüred…”
But having dissenting views in like being a homosexual in Hungary. This politician, for instance, is magnanimously tolerant of it – as long as they do it at home, in private.
“If someone is publicly against us in politics, we don’t talk to him, we don’t try to convince him, we defeat him. Period.”
Our man is very, very tolerant with dissenting views – as long as they don’t want to make money at the same time. That, you see, is the discretion of the System, whether someone is allowed to eat or not.
If “…we are talking about a politician, who goes against the System, any member of the System, I must say he should not eat because over here, we feed the people.”
“Dual-pole politics are over. What is happening in this country right now is really the building of the NER, and its expansion to the whole country.”
“We would like to mend fences and cover the trenches, we would like to bring over those who are willing to fall in line. There are positions for them. Everyone has a place in the System. But we must not be attacked publicly, because you become the enemy of the System that very moment.”
In other words, if you attack us, you won’t eat. isn’t it glorious? And by attacking he doesn’t mean a baseball bat. He means blowing the whistle over Fidesz corruption, state capture, on local Fideszniks and national oligarchs stealing projects blind getting fat on tenders.
So when Orbán reassured everyone that there is a big enough cake to cut in even the newcomers, but definitely enough to keep the loyalists wealthy and rewarded – the mayor of Eger went even further and specified. And when just Orbán talked about the benefits of loyalism, his local executioner even spelled out what it means for the non-loyalists, what happens to those who attack.
By the way, this is the difference between Orbán’s media and independent media. This tape would never have emerged in Orbán’s media, and it was never reported in the entirety of Orbán’s media. But Egri Ügyek, a local newspaper in Eger, Northern Hungary, has somehow managed to stay independent enough to break this story. Shortly after Orbán gave his rousing talk about his 11th commandment to his loyalists at Fidesz’ party congress, this loyalist appears to have given the same speech at home. A bit more vulgar and a bit more explicit – but some local peasants only understand if you spell it out for them, right?
