In the last ten years we grew used to finding Hungary at the wrong end of every country ranking.
When we make it to the absolute bottom in Europe in some new way, it even makes the news. Well, it used to, while we still had news: i.e. independent media with universal coverage. Now we are down to a few sites that lack the bandwidth to cover everything and are desperately struggling to crowdfund their existence.
But this chart made Orbán’s work the most visible. This is the speed and the depth of the damage he had done to Hungarian minds. In the 10 years between 2008 and 2018, 40% fewer Hungarians could accept a non-white, non-Hungarian in their neighborhood.
Note how they stopped asking whether the respondent would accept gypsies/Jews/migrants in his neighborhood. They ask instead if others would – so the respondents can project without shame if they so wish. And they do.
